mARK YOUR CALENDARS! we're hosting two "talking about a revolution" events in november!
The Crosslake Area Library will kick off America’s 250th birthday celebrations with two special events prior to the airing The American Revolution, the highly anticipated new documentary from Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt. This six-part, 12-hour series airs November 16-21.
Event #1 - Thursday, November 6th at 3:30 p.m.
Join us for a 26-minute sneak peek of the PBS documentary followed by a discussion with Professor David Gray from Brainerd’s Central Lakes College. Come find out what to expect from the documentary and ask questions of a local history teacher.
The documentary, about America’s founding struggle, will present the story of the men and women of the Revolutionary generation, their humanity in victory and defeat, and the crisis that they lived through. By weaving together accounts of American political leaders and their British counterparts with the perspectives of the so-called ordinary people who waged and witnessed war, The American Revolution will be an expansive, evenhanded look at the virtues and the contradictions in the fight for independence and the birth of the United States.
Event #2 - Thursday, November 13th at 3:30 p.m
Join us for the second "Talking About a Revolution" event where Carleton College professor, historian and author Serena Zabin will present: The Boston Massacre: A Family History.
Zabin’s book The Boston Massacre: A Family History, offers a fresh and deeply human perspective on one of the most iconic events leading up to the American Revolution. Rather than focusing solely on the political tensions between colonists and British soldiers, the author explores the personal relationships and social dynamics that shaped the conflict. Zabin combs through journals, newspapers and official records to reconstruct the lives of individuals—both soldiers and civilians—whose stories have long been overshadowed by revolutionary rhetoric.

EXPLORE MINNESOTA WITH THE LIBRARY'S HELP
Getting out and exploring the great outdoors has just gotten easier at the Crosslake Area Library. Not only have we started collaborating with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to provide a free, seven-day state park pass for library patrons to check out through the Minnesota State Park Library Program, but we also offer four themed Adventure Backpacks to give you the books and equipment you need to make the most out of the experience. Thank you to PAL for the funding to get these backpacks going!
Whether you need fishing poles and equipment for your next lake excursion, binoculars for bird-watching, nature books to help you identify all sorts of flora and fauna, bug collecting equipment, or even scavenger hunt challenges, the adventure backpacks are for you. Each pack comes with a first aid kit, mosquito repellent and high quality guides and books for both kids and adults. Ask at the circulation desk to check out our Fishing, Nature, Bird Watching or Scavenger Hunt adventure backpacks.
While you're at the library, ask us about the State Park Pass. The pass covers the vehicle entry fee to any state park or recreation area, making it easier to visit a new destination or an old favorite. The pass is checked out on a first-come, first served basis so feel free to call 618-692-7323 or visit us to see if it’s available. The pass should be clearly displayed on your vehicle dashboard so park staff can check for the expiration date. Passes only cover the vehicle entrance fee, so if you’d like to camp, reservations will need to be made and paid for separately. Finally, when you are finished, just recycle the pass!
